When David Keane saw the beautiful young girl look at him and wiggle her pinkie, he had no idea this was the beginning of a turbulent love affair that would affect the rest of his life. Kathy McCarthy is rich and quirky and grows to love David. However, after an abortion and other issues, she feels seeped irrevocably in evil and capable of ruining David's life. To protect him, she becomes promiscuous, thinking that he would not handle love without exclusivity. After college, David is assigned to report on racial unrest in Harlem. He takes with him an odd mix of characters, and Kathy, who promptly begins an affair with Virgil, a corrupt black Catholic priest who rules a section of Harlem. Kathy is torn between her love of David and her love and fear of Virgil, who pledges to skewer David if he tries to take Kathy away. David's chance of survival is minimal. Is the risk worth it? Perhaps, Kathy won't leave. Last Leaf From A Wishing Tree is a beautifully-written novel. The author weaves character and context with image and metaphor that makes his prose almost lyrical. No one does that better.
